What Baby Boomer Seniors Want In Their Retirement Homes

The generation of children that was born between 1946 and 1964 are now beginning to retire and make the move out of their family homes. Baby Boomers, as they are called, represent the largest group of people ever to live and are poised to reshape the housing market over the next two decades. You may not be ready to retire and you may not even be a Baby Boomer, but there are a few things you should know about this group of folks as they leave work and move.

Baby Boomers want no comparisons with their parents and grandparents. This group of youth oriented seniors will stay active longer thanks to the miracle of modern medicine, better diets and exercise, and a different outlook on aging. When it comes to retirement housing you need to reconsider exactly what that means. For example, boomer retirees will want the following amenities:

A big home with an office or two. Chances are the boomers will never sit back in a rocking chair waiting for the Grim Reaper to appear. Instead, they'll be working part time from home, setting their own schedules, having the grandkids over for long weekends, and entertaining frequently. Add in a sunroom, a wide open kitchen, and an exercise room too!

Accessible to universities. University towns are popular destinations for retired boomers. Already, townhouses are springing up near the University of North Carolina, Rutgers University, and college towns across the country as boomers envision that they will take classes, attend cultural activities on campus, go to sporting events, and hang out with the professors.

No senior housing here. Completely segregated adult communities are avoided like the plague when it comes to boomers. Who wants to be around old folks all of the time? Instead, boomer retirees will make certain that mixed use neighborhoods are built to allow for families, singles, and every other housing demographic to live locally. No, they don't want to be over run by kids, but they do want to have a place where their grandkids are welcome.

Luxury, not spartan. Aging boomers will also be seeking out homes that are equipped, not stripped. Extensive and modern wiring for entertainment systems, two car garages, spas, maintenance free exteriors and a host of other amenities will be standard demanded items.

So, if you have a home for sale and it meets most of these requirements, do not be surprised if your buyers are active adults of the Baby Boomer generation!
